Do you talk to yourself?

I am a firm believer that everyone in the world talks to themselves on a pretty regular basis. Some reading this article might argue that they don’t, but that person you just said “I don’t talk to myself” isn’t me. Its ok to speak to yourself, in fact, I think it is a must!

No matter if you want to admit it or not, every single person in the world talks to themselves on a daily basis. The big problems with that however, it that we don’t realize that we are doing it, and therefore aren’t controlling what we are saying. Almost all of a persons inner dialogue is negative. Things you only think to yourself instead of saying out loud. The problem with that, is even though nobody else hears what you are thinking, you do! And a negative thought is about as toxic of a thing as there is in the world. One of my favorite quotes is as follows:

Be careful of your thoughts, for your thoughts become your words. Be careful of your words, for your words become your actions. Be careful of your actions, for your actions become your habits. Be careful of your habits, for your habits become your character. Be careful of your character, for your character becomes your destiny.

— Chinese proverb

If you only knew how powerful your thoughts were, you wouldn’t dare say anything negative to yourself. The greatest personal development book of all time in my opinion, Think and Grow Rich, is all about how to control your mind and your thoughts to gather everything you acquire. If everything in life starts with your thoughts, why aren’t you talking to yourself in a more powerful and effective way? Self talk is a powerful part of the game. Talk to yourself for where you want to be in life, not where you are now.

The problem is most people are never taught to believe in themselves. Their entire life they have been programmed to only know what they can’t do. Did you know that the average high school student has been told No (or variations of the word No) 17,000 times by their graduation? No wonder why people are so negative, they have no earthly idea what they can do because all they have ever been told is what they can’t do!

That is the reason I start almost all of my leadership trainings with mindset training. You have to help people break out of their mental programming and help them to understand how important their thoughts and the words they use are. I challenge everyone reading this article to start each day with a powerful message to yourself! Watch how much of a difference in makes in your day to day! There are a few great books I would highly recommend each of you read on the topic of mindset and powerful self talk!
